Provenance studies for stone from the Castle gateway, Cape Town
Historical buildings often have complex architectural histories which are difficult to unravel from archival and archaeological sources alone. Provenance studies of stone used to build the gate of Cape Town's Castle suggest that this ornamental archway was carved from slate quarried on Robben Island, rather than imported ready-made from the Netherlands.
