Neighborhood Sustainability Assessment (NSA) Tool: Functionality analysis of a tool developed in Hong Kong tested in a neighborhood in Brazil
The concern with sustainable development has been an important issue in management committees and public policies. Therefore, the assessment of sustainability, whether of buildings, urban communities, or even cities, is considered relevant. This research aims to analyze the functionality of an NSA tool developed in Hong Kong, when applied in the context of a city in Brazil. The chosen model has 26 indicators, divided into 5 categories, based on the concepts of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Five Capitals Models (FCM). The neighborhood under analysis is located in the city of Curitiba-Brazil. As a data source, the model uses census information provided by government sources, atmospheric monitoring data and geographic data. The results demonstrate a reasonable level of flexibility of the tool. Only 10 indicators could not be applied in the Brazilian context, due to data unavailability. As a contribution, some adaptations in the analysis structure are suggested, maintaining adherence to the SDGs and FCM, but with new methods of calculating the indicators with the data available in Brazil. The use and adaptation of existing models allows the evaluation of neighborhoods in different contexts. Using models with integrated SDGs, contributes to achieving local sustainability goals.
