Cyprus energy resources and their potential to increase sustainability
Cyprus is EU member since 2004 and characterized as an isolated energy market but also as an emerging natural gas producer. With an energy system far from being sustainable, almost totally depended on imported fossil fuels with low contribution of renewable energy (less than 15%), without any cable or pipeline interconnections until now, the country has the possibility to exploit a high renewables potential and the recently found offshore natural gas reserves. This paper gathers the internal and external barriers of Cyprus energy resources and concludes to a SWOT matrix analysis that lists the potential sustainability Strengths and Opportunities which should be enhanced as well as Weaknesses and Threats which have to be confronted in order to increase Country's energy sustainability.
