Description

Molteno Reservoir was completed in 1881 and is the city’s oldest reservoir that is still in use. It is also the city’s fifth largest reservoir. It was originally fed by springs and streams in the area. However, 10 years after construction this supply was supplemented with water diverted from the Disa River on Table Mountain above Hout Bay. The additional water catchment was made possible by the completion of the Woodhead tunnel in 1891, which cuts through the Twelve Apostle Mountains from the Disa River to the Camps Bay side of the mountain. Cape Town Municipality’s first power station, the Graaff’s Power Station, was completed in 1895 and was situated next to the reservoir.
